What Does it Cost?
The great thing about apprenticeships and traineeships is that unlike university of college, you are not required to pay for your training, as this cost is the responsibility of your employer.
The Australian Government may provide incentives to assist your employer with your training and employment costs. If your employer is not eligible for these Government incentives, they will be required to pay for the training on a fee-for-service basis.
Tuition and Student Service Fees
If you are undertaking a Certificate Level III or IV Qualification you may be required to pay a nominal Tuition Fee and/or a Student Services fee directly to your training provider, as your contribution to the training you receive. Limits exist as to maximum fees payable, and full or partial reductions are available under certain conditions.
In some cases your employer may choose to pay these fees on your behalf. Speak with your Training Provider to find out whether these fees apply to you.
Tools and Uniform
Depending on the apprenticeship or traineeship you undertake, you may be required to purchase a work uniform and/or tools. If you are commencing a traditional trade you may be eligible for a tool allowance under your award or employment agreement.
Tools for your Trade
An $800 ‘Tools for your Trade’ incentive is available to eligible apprentices and trainees in selected trade occupations, once they have been employed for three months. The apprentice or trainee will take ownership of the tools once they have completed nine months of their apprenticeship or traineeship.
Start up Assistance
Even if you are not eligible for a tool allowance under your award or agreement, you may still be eligible to apply for the State Governments ‘Start up Assistance’, which can assist you in purchasing tools or protective equipment to a set value.
