Training

Apprenticeships and traineeships (also known as a Australian Apprenticeship) involve both on and off-the-job training.

The off-the-job componant of your traineeship or apprenticeship is assessed by a Training Provider (also known as a Supervising Registered Training Organisation or SRTO). You and your employer are responsible for selecting a Training Provider who assists you by:

  • Completing an Induction with you and your employer which includes information on your rights and responsibilities.
  • Conducting a Language, Literacy and Numeracy assessment to identify whether you may need any help or assistance during your apprenticeship or traineeship.
  • Completing an Enterprise Resource Assessment to ensure that your employer has the capacity to train you.
(The above will be completed with you and your employer prior to the registration of your Training Contract and generally within the probationary period.)
  • Negotiating a Training Plan with you and your employer, which details the training you need to complete to gain your qualification and when, where and how it is to be delivered.  You and your employer must receive a copy of this plan.
  • Providing you with a Training Record (usually a book), where you document achievement of competencies and have them signed by your workplace supervisor. Your Training Record book must be kept on your employer premises at all times.
  • Training Providers may be either private or public (TAFE) organisations who deliver training either at the workplace, in a training college, or a mixture of both. Both you and your employer are free to select the Training Provider that best meets your needs.

The on-the-job componant of your apprenticeship or traineeship is assessed by your employer. When both you and your employer agree that you are competent, then you and your employer will sign off in your training record book.
