A full-time traineeship generally lasts for a period between one to two years, whilst a full-time apprenticeship usually lasts for up to four years. If you have started a part-time or Australian school -based apprenticeship or traineeship, the nominal durations above will generally be doubled. Whilst each apprenticeship or traineeship has a ‘nominal’ duration, most are now ‘competency based’ which means that you may complete the Training Contract once all parties (yourself, your Training Provider and your employer) agree that all the competencies have been achieved.
Completion of your apprenticeship or traineeship can occur at any stage, as long as all parties agree that you have achieved the required competencies (if the training contract is time-based you may be required to complete the full nominated duration of the apprenticeship or traineeship).
There is a set procedure required for you to complete your apprenticeship or traineeship, that includes the signing of a ‘Completion Agreement’ with your employer and sending this to your Training Provider. Once all parties have agreeed that you are competent then your Training Provider will forward the completion agreement to the Department of Education, Training and the Arts (DETA).
The Training Contract is not formally completed until the completion agreement has been approved by DETA. DETA will usually send a letter of completion to both you and your employer to notify you that the contract has formally been completed and the actual date of completion. Completion Agreements can be requested by contacting your Training Provider.
