Released 24/01/2008

"How to get your employee's skills recognised"

A new online tool is available on the Queensland Government’s Train and Employ website.
Visit http://trainandemploy.qld.gov.au/client/jobs_and_careers/skills_
recognition/index.html

It has been developed to assist employers, workers (new and existing) and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to determine the appropriate avenue for an individual to obtain formal recognition of their skills and experience.

It has been developed to assist employers, workers (new and existing) and Registered Training Organisations (RTOs) to determine the appropriate avenue for an individual to obtain formal recognition of their skills and experience.

The online tool outlines the options available and then acts as a self service tool, specifying an individual's eligibility and the requirements for either:

  • Recognition of prior learning;
  • Recognition of overseas qualifications; or
  • Trade recognition

After answering a series of questions, it will:

  • Determine a person's trade and employment experience can be credited towards gaining a qualification in Queensland;
  • How holders of qualifications gained outside of Australia can apply to be registered to work in certain jobs and/or industries; and
  • Learn more about how international formal academic qualifications are assessed against Australian awards

Once the most suitable option is determined via the questionnaire, the tool acts as a gateway to other services, providing information and links relating to the organisation the individual needs to contact for the assessment (e.g. RTO, Skills Recognition, Skilling Solutions Queensland, Construction Skills Queensland, Trade Recognition Australia). Information such as the cost of the service, funding options and what documentation and evidence is required for them to obtain formal recognition.

Please note: The online tool is a free service. There is however a standard $400* non-refundable application fee, payable at the time you submit your written application with the appropriate evidence.

* You may be eligible for a reduced fee of $100 if:

  • you hold the current Certificate III in your trade
  • you are currently dependent on a maximum social security benefit

Further eligibility criteria applies to these fee reductions, please contact your local Skills Recognition Officer for more information on 1300 369 935 or email skillsrecognition@deta.qld.gov.au
