Selecting a Training Provider

Once the student and their employer have decided on the qualification the student will be undertaking, a training provider (also known as a Supervising Registered Training Organisation or SRTO) will need to be selected to deliver the training component of their apprenticeship or traineeship. The training provider can either be a private or public (TAFE) provider.

Training providers responsibilities

The training provider, in consultation with the employer and your school, must draw up a Training Plan and an Education, Training and Employment Schedule (ETES Form), which outlines both the student's on and off-the-job training requirements.

  • The Training Plan details the Training Program and sets out the competencies the student needs to achieve as part of their qualification and the method in which the training provider will deliver the training
  • The ETES Form is drawn up in collaboration with all parties, including your school. Your Principal or their delegate must approve the Australian School-based apprenticeship or traineeship and sign the ETES Form, which documents each of the times (each week) that the student will be undertaking schooling, training and paid work.

Who attends the apprenticeship or traineeship sign up?

It is essential that some part of an Australian School-based apprenticeship or traineeship (either on or off-the-job training) be conducted within school hours. It is therefore very beneficial to have all associated parties present when negotiating the training program or plan. This ensures that the needs and circumstances of all parties are taken into consideration.

Having all interested parties present at the initial signup induction also means that associated paperwork can be completed with a minimum degree of difficulty. Although not always possible, this “Best Practice” model provides all parties with an opportunity to meet, discuss responsibilities and to express any concerns or suggestions they may have towards the apprenticeship or traineeship.

Nominated parties who should attend an Australian School-based sign-up include:

  • School representative
  • The apprentice or trainee
  • The employer
  • Parent/Legal Guardian
  • Supervising Registered Training Organisation
  • The New Apprenticeship Centre (Queensland Apprenticeship Services)

Different Modes of Training

On-the-job Training:

Allows the student to achieve the dedicated industry skills and necessary hands-on experience needed to complete their qualification. This may be achieved by:

  • Attending work placement on one set day per week during the school week e.g. every Wednesday.
  • Attending work placement in times outside those hours during the school week e.g. Thursday night, weekends and school holidays.

Off-the-job Training:

Allows the student to complete the theoretical component of their qualification. This may be achieved by:

  • Attending College during their school week
  • Working on work booklets in their own time or in spare periods while at school
  • Incorporating training outside their normal school hours or over your school holidays.
