Student considerations

Before deciding to undertake a School-based apprenticeship or traineeship, it is important that the student consider the following:

  • Will they be able to manage the workload of school, paid employment and off-the-job training?
  • Do they have the support of their parents?
  • Which qualification will they choose from over 600 apprenticeship and traineeship options
  • What day will the employer require them to attend work and will this fit in with their school timetable?
  • Whether they are willing to undertake extra training or paid employment outside normal school hours?
  • Will they be able to find regular and reliable transportation, to and from their workplace?

Can a student undertake an Australian School-based apprenticeship or traineeship and still achieve an OP?

The answer is yes. Overall Positions (OPs) are determined by the results from a student’s top 5 Authority subjects. Generally students undertake 6 subjects in Years 11 and 12. If they are wishing to undertake an Australian School-based apprenticeship or traineeship they have the ability to drop one subject, therefore allowing them to rearrange their curriculum in order to undertake an apprenticeship or traineeship.

Using a Group Training Organisation

Group Training Organisations (GTO’s) provide an attractive alternative to standard employment and can help your students secure a position with an employer.

Group Training Organisations:

  • Employ the student directly and provide them with a safety net by finding and placing them with a suitable host employer throughout the apprenticeship or traineeship
  • Provide a high level of support by regularly monitoring the student in the workplace to ensure they are provided with the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully complete their qualification

Students wishing to register with a GTO will usually need to:

  • Submit a resume and covering letter
  • Undertake a general knowledge test
  • Attend an interview

How your school can assist your students

Most schools actively encourage their students to obtain industry experience through Vocational Education and Training (VET), as it provides valuable hands on skills and experience, making them more employable after they complete their schooling.

Most schools offer their support and assistance by:

  • Revising the students curriculum to include time for both on and off-the-job training
  • Structuring the students work placement to ensure they receive a  minimum of 48 days paid work per year
  • Jointly signing a document which outlines the student's training requirements to ensure they receive the necessary industry skills
  • If necessary, providing the student with school work which they may have missed while undertaking their apprenticeship or traineeship
  • Providing the student with support and advice on the impact the apprenticeship or traineeship will have on the student's studies and after school time
